How to Save

Cash can be paid in at the St Albans office or at any of our other customer centres.  Remember to bring your passbook with you when paying in.

Cheques  (payable to “St Albans District Credit Union” with your membership number on the back) may also be sent by post with your passbook. We also accept third party cheques made payable directly to the member.

Funds will not be credited to a member's account until the  cheque has cleared (allow 4 working days).

Standing Orders can be arranged with your bank/building society.

Payroll Deduction schemes can be arranged with local employers. Where there is enough demand, employees can have monies deducted from their monthly pay and paid into their Credit Union savings or loan accounts.

Benefit Payments can be directly paid into the Credit Union’s bank account and credited to the member.

Interest cannot (under current laws) be paid but dividends can be paid annually following a vote of members at the AGM based on a recommendation by the Management Board.  For our junior savers (not strictly members)

For Junior Savers/Treasure Chest (not strictly members) we can offer interest and have paid 2% on their average savings balance in each of the last few years. Parents of children at the Treasure Chest schools and who are members of the St Albans District Credit Union may also pay in cash or cheques at those collections.

Statements showing a complete record of a member’s transactions is held in a separate computer record. These will be provided once a year, after the financial year-end a member can request a statement record of savings and loans at any time.

Credit unions are a better way to save

Saving with St Albans District Credit Union is easy.  You can open an account with as little as £1 and save as much or as little as you like as often as you like up to a maximum of £15,000

You can pay your savings with cash, cheque, standing order or payroll deductions (if applicable), you can even have benefits paid directly into your savings account and you can withdraw your money at anytime.

Remember, you are not just another customer, you are a member of the credit union.  You are a part-owner of an organisation which is run only for the benefit of members who live or work in the local area.

Withdrawals of some or all savings can be made by a member at any time. We aim to pay withdrawals by cheque within a week. We can normally pay out small amounts, up to £50, by cash on demand; however, this is subject to availability at the Main Office or Customer Centre (but not the Hub) unless the member has made a prior arrangement for the money to be set aside.  If you do not have a bank account, we can provide an "encashment letter" to be used at the local Lloyds Bank branches. Please ask for this letter, if you need it, at the same time as your cheque . Unless an account is specifically closed, a member must retain a minimum of £1 in his/her account.

'All eligible saving deposits with the credit union are protected up to £75,000 under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Member's entitlements and the exclusions under this scheme are detailed in the FSCS Information Sheet available to view and download from the Form Store'
